Public faith in the Criminal Justice System is at a all-time low in the wake of the catastrophic failures of the Post Office – One of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British History and the Single Justice Procedure – used by DVLA, TV Licensing Authority amongst others. The Single Justice Procedure (SJP) secretive system which allows magistrates to convict and sentence Defendents for low level offences behind closed doors. We have heard from numerous individuals of the harsh, cruel and unfair treatment that they have been subjected to as a result of Insurance, car tax and other bills. Often these practices have raised major issues of Conflict of interest similar to the Post Office scandal.
The Government proposes a Code of Practice to deal with some of these issues, we are not convinced that a Code of practice without checks and balances will address the injustice that a number of Defendants experience.
If you have experience as a Defendant of the Single Justice Procedure – we would like to hear from you
